That’s What Friends Are For

sung by Dionne Warwick with Elton John, Gladys Knight & Stevie Wonder.

This song was written by Burt Bacharach and Carole Bayer Sager.  It was recorded in 1985 as a benefit song for the American Foundation for AIDS Research, which raised over $3 million dollars for that cause.

And I never thought I’d feel this way
And as far as I’m concerned
I’m glad I got the chance to say
That I do believe I love you

And if I should ever go away
Well then close your eyes and try
To feel the way we do today
And then if you can remember

Keep smiling, keep shining
Knowing you can always count on me, for sure
That’s what friends are for
For good times and bad times
I’ll be on your side forevermore
That’s what friends are for

Well you came and opened me
And now there’s so much more I see
And so by the way
I thank you

Oh and then for the times when we’re apart
Well then close your eyes and know
The words are coming from my heart
And then if you can remember

Keep smiling and keep shining
Knowing you can always count on me, for sure
That’s what friends are for
In good times and bad times
I’ll be on your side forevermore
That’s what friends are for

Keep smiling, keep shining
Knowing you can always count on me, for sure
That’s what friends are for
For good times and bad times
I’ll be on your side forevermore
That’s what friends are for

Keep smiling, keep shining
Knowing you can always count on me, for sure
‘Cause I tell you, that’s what friends are for
For good times and the bad times
I’ll be on your side forevermore
That’s what friends are for

Shine

by Anna Nalick

an American singer/songwriter born and raised in California.   This is the title song from her second album, which was released March 25, 2008.

Oh, the night makes you a star
And it holds you cold in its arms
You’re the one to whom nobody verses “I love you”
Unless you say it first
So you lie there, holding your breath
And it’s strange how soon you forget
That you’re like stars, they only show up when it’s dark
‘Cause they don’t know their worth

And I think you need to stop following misery‘s lead
Shine away, shine away, shine away

Isn’t it time you got over
How fragile you are
We’re all waiting, waiting on your supernova
‘Cause that’s who you are
And you’ve only begun to shine

There are times
When the poets and porn stars align
And you won’t know who to believe in
Well, that’s a good time to be leaving
And the past, he knocks on your door
And throws stones at your window at four in the morning
Well, maybe he thinks it’s romantic
He’s crazy, but you knew that before

And I think you need to stop following misery‘s lead
Shine away, shine away, shine away

Isn’t it time you got over
How fragile you are
We’re all waiting, waiting on your supernova
‘Cause that’s who you are
And you’ve only begun to shine
Yeah, you’ve only begun to shine

Won’t you shine, shine, shine
Shine over shadow, oh, oh
Shine, shine, shine
Shine over shadow, oh, oh
Shine, shine, shine, shine over

I think you need to stop following misery‘s lead
Shine away, shine away, shine away

Isn’t it time you got over
How fragile you are

And you’ve only begun to shine

So Small

by Carrie Underwood

an American country music singer, songwriter and actor.  Her career started when she won the fourth season of American Idol in 2005.  She has since won six Grammy Awards.  This song is from her second album, Carnival Ride, released in 2007.

What you got if you ain’t got love?
The kind that you just wanna give away
It’s okay to open up
Go ahead and let the light shine through

I know it’s hard on a rainy day
You wanna shut the world out
And just be left alone
But don’t run out on your faith

‘Cause sometimes that mountain you’ve been climbing
Is just a grain of sand
And what you’ve been out there searching for forever
Is in your hands

And when you figure out
Love is all that matters after all
It sure makes everything else
Seem so small

It’s so easy to get lost inside
A problem that seems so big at the time
It’s like a river that’s so wide
It swallows you whole

While you’re sitting around thinking about what you can’t change
And worrying about all the wrong things
Time’s flying by, moving so fast
You better make it count ’cause you can’t get it back

Sometimes that mountain you’ve been climbing
Is just a grain of sand
And what you’ve been out there searching for forever
Is in your hands

Oh, and when you figure out
Love is all that matters after all
It sure makes everything else
Seem so small

Sometimes that mountain you’ve been climbing
Is just a grain of sand
And what you’ve been out there searching for forever
Is in your hands

And then you figure out
Love is all that matters after all
It sure makes everything else
Oh, it sure makes everything else
Seem so small

Brave

by Sara Bareilles

an American musician, singer-songwriter and pianist.  This song, released in 2013 on her album The Blessed Unrest, was written by Bareilles and Jack Antonoff.

You can be amazing
You can turn a phrase into a weapon or a drug
You can be the outcast
Or be the backlash of somebody’s lack of love
Or you can start speaking up
Nothing’s gonna hurt you the way that words do
When they settle ‘neath your skin
Kept on the inside and no sunlight
Sometimes a shadow wins
But I wonder what would happen if you

Say what you wanna say
And let the words fall out
Honestly I wanna see you be brave
With what you want to say
And let the words fall out
Honestly I wanna see you be brave

I just wanna see you
I just wanna see you
Just wanna see you
I wanna see you be brave
I just wanna see you
I just wanna see you
Just wanna see you
I wanna see you be brave

Everybody’s been there, everybody’s been stared down
By the enemy
Fallen for the fear and done some disappearing
Bow down to the mighty
Don’t run, stop holding your tongue
Maybe there’s a way out of the cage where you live
Maybe one of these days you can let the light in
Show me how big your brave is

Say what you wanna say
And let the words fall out
Honestly I wanna see you be brave
With what you want to say
And let the words fall out
Honestly I wanna see you be brave

And since your history of silence
Won’t do you any good
Did you think it would?
Let your words be anything but empty
Why don’t you tell them the truth?

Say what you wanna say
And let the words fall out
Honestly I wanna see you be brave
With what you want to say
And let the words fall out
Honestly I wanna see you be brave

I just wanna see you
I just wanna see you
I just wanna see you
I wanna see you be brave
I just wanna see you
I just wanna see you

Nothing More

by The Alternate Routes

an American rock band formed in 2002 by Tim Warren and Eric Donnelly with drummer Kurt Leon and base player Mike Sembos.  This song was released as a single in 2013.

To be humble, to be kind.
It is the giving of the peace in your mind.
To a stranger, to a friend
To give in such a way that has no end.

We are love, we are one
We are how we treat each other when the day is done.
We are peace, we are war
We are how we treat each other and nothing more

To be bold, to be brave.
It is the thinking that the heart can still be saved
And the darkness can come quick
The danger’s in the anger and the hanging on to it.

We are love, we are one
We are how we treat each other when the day is done.
We are peace, we are war
We are how we treat each other and nothing more

Tell me what it is that you see
A world that’s filled with endless possibility?
Heroes don’t look like they used to, they look like you do.

We are love, we are one
We are how we treat each other when the day is done.
