Good / Well

What’s the difference between “good” and “well“?  It’s not that hard to remember.  Good is an adjective, which means that it always gives more information about (modifies) a noun (person, place or thing).  Well, on the other hand, is an adverb and can only modify a verb or an adjective.

Examples with good:

  • This is a good computer.
  • She had a good time at the party.
  • That restaurant wasn’t very good.
  • That sweater looks good on you.

Examples with well:

  • Mary studies well.
  • We are working well together.
  • I like my steak well done.
  • This car is well made.

There are some exceptions:

  • I feel good
  • I feel well
  • I am good
  • I am well

All 4 are correct but have different meanings.

“I feel good” means I feel happy, and I have lots of energy.

“I feel well” means I was sick but now I’m better.

“I am good” means I’m happy with what I’ve got.

“I am well” means my health is good

Examples:

I just had a nap and now I feel good.

I was sick last week, but now I feel well.

I don’t need any more coffee.  I’m good.

I’m well.  Thank you for asking.
